2009-2010 Winners Announced

Before I announce the recipients of the 2009 Stacey Cook/Sun Valley Ski Tools Scholarship, I want to take a moment to thank everyone who applied.  This was by far the most impressive group of applications in the history of the scholarship.  There were almost 100 of them and it was harder than ever to pick only 4 winners.  While reading the applications, I was wishing there was something I could do for each of the young and obviously talented racers.  I know the 4 scholarships that I am giving out go to some very deserving athletes who will represent SVST well, have the right love of the sport and desire to go wherever they want to in this sport.  I am very proud of them and excited to get to work with them throughout this next season.  I want to wish everyone who applied good luck this season and thanks for applying.  I read every single application and truly enjoyed each story.  AND REMEMBER… as long as you are a J2 or a J3 for the next season to come, you can re-apply @ www.staceycook.net when applications open in the summer.  It has happened before… someone has been selected their second time around.  Keep trying and keep doing what you’ve been doing.  You’re all winners!

The 2009-2010 Stacey Cook/SVST Competition Team is:

  1. Julia Bjorkman (2nd Yr J3)- Diamond Peak Ski Team (NV)- Would ski with her Chihuahua “Nikky” in her speed suit if they allowed.
  2. Grace Dolan (1st Yr J2)- Squaw Valley Ski Team (CA)- Excellent student/athlete, good sport, but watch out…“I’m there to win.”
  3. Nevada Kramer (1st Yr J3)- Whitefish Mountain Resort Race Team (MT)- Superb dishwasher @ the Red Caboose Diner with his sights set on the U.S. Ski Team
  4. Twins Colin and Peter Martens- National Sports Academy Ski Team, Lake Placid, NY- Two very focused young racers whose mom was a Cowboy!  (U. of Wyoming Ski Team)

Congratulations to Julia, Grace, Nevada (aka. Vegas or Money), Colin and Peter… and thanks to your parents, coaches and teachers for their part in your success.  Enjoy the great tools and wax from SVST and we’ll be in touch.

2008-2009 Winners Announced

MAMMOTH, Calif. (Nov. 3) – For sixth-year U.S. Ski Team veteran Stacey Cook (Mammoth, CA), success has always come thanks to those who have helped along the way. Now it's time to pay it back as she announced the 2008 winners of the Stacey Cook/Sun Valley Ski Tools (SVST) Junior Scholarship, awarding four young racers wax and ski tuning equipment for several seasons of racing. The recipients were chosen from 130 applicants each submitting an essay and coaches recommendations through www.staceycook.net.

2008 Stacey Cook/SVST Junior Scholarship Winners (DOB, hometown and club program) Katelyn Barclay (7/11/93; Pittsford, NY; Burke Mountain Academy) Ryan Cochran-Siegle (3/27/92; Starksboro, VT; Mount Mansfield Ski and Snowboard Club) Ziggy Rohloff (822/93; Hot Sulpher Springs, CO; Winter Park Competition Center) Sydney Staples (2/16/93; Park City, UT; Park City Ski Education Foundation)

"It was really difficult to narrow down the applicants to just four winners, but these four athletes were exemplary and certainly deserve the honor," said Cook, who said she passed many hours of airplane time reading applications. "Of course, SVST is really the one to thank. Their support not only helps out these young racers, but it also helps out their parents."

Barclay, a first year J2 in the 10th grade at Burke Mountain Academy wrote on her application that her dream is to be on the U.S. Ski Team and compete at the Olympic Games. According to her coach Adam Chadbourne, "Katelyn has thrived in this highly competitive environment and is emerging as one of the strongest competitors in her age class. More important than her results is her great technical foundation, excellent work ethic and strong commitment to the character values we hold in highest esteem at BMA."

As a cousin to U.S. Ski Team athletes Jimmy Cochran (Keene, NH) and Jessica Kelley (Starksboro, VT), Cochran-Siegle is a continuation of the Cochran family legacy, an alpine family that spans four generations. "Tuning my skis allows me to understand how the condition of my ski may reflect on the way that I am skiing," said Cochran-Siegle, who was sixth at the U.S. J2 Championships last season. "I know that a well tuned ski can make it much easier to progress my technique."

For a man who calls U.S. downhill great Daron Rahlves his favorite racer, Rohloff gained accolades from his coach Michael Cahill for both his results and for his character. "There are enough athletic achievements in Ziggy's skiing results to let them stand on their own, however without looking at him as a person, teammate and friend you will only get part of the bigger picture that leads me to encourage your support of him," wrote Cahill.

Staples, a first year J2 with the Park City Ski Team, is one of five siblings including current U.S. Ski Team racer Kiley Staples. Cook met Staples during the National Development Systems camp at Mammoth Mountain in the spring. "Sydney showed an incredible ability to listen to feedback and adapt her skiing. Her improvement in just one day was incredible," said Cook.

2007-2008 Winners!

In concert with U.S. Ski Team member and Olympian Stacey Cook, Sun Valley Ski Tools is pleased to announce the selection of its 2007-2008 “SVST Competition Team”.  For many years SVST has been providing its tuning products to a select group of young alpine ski competitors as a way to give something back to the racing community.

This year, Stacey Cook stepped up to host the selection process through her website www.staceycook.net.   Based on the number and quality of the many applicants, this wasn’t an easy process.  Four individuals were selected based on a combination of traits.  These do include on-snow performance, but also consider grades, training dedication, community service, and other elements of a well-rounded athlete.  The athletes that were chosen displayed all of these traits and SVST is proud to be associated with them and be a small part of their skiing careers.

The sponsorship award includes tools and wax that are sufficient to support several seasons of competition.    SVST honors the parental commitment of time and finances that is required to see a young athlete pursue this sport and recognizes, as well, the coaches who are working hard to produce such talents.  It is the goal of this program to provide just a little bit of help along the way.

SVST wishes to thank everyone who applied.  There were an unbelievable number of great applications.  The recipients for the 2007-2008 season are:

1.    Miranda Ness- Port Orchard, Washington (Crystal Mountain Alpine Club)
2.    John Collinson- Snowbird, Utah (Snowbird Ski Education Foundation)
3.    Matthew Perejda- Bethel, Maine (Gould Ski Racing-Sunday River)
4.    Kirk Carlson- Mammoth Lakes, California (Mammoth Mountain Ski Team)
